Knowing the area
that you are going to clean and inform your team members about it.
- Determine the exact location of the cleaning area. This is also important in case you need to call for help.
- Visualize environmental features and hazards – i.e. coastal area, traffic, railroad, height/depth, water, hazardous objects (power grid, pipes, etc.).
- If you are likely to encounter dangerous animals, find out how best to avoid them.
- Are there any areas where there is an increased risk of droppings or needles from drug users? If so, avoid that area and do not take unnecessary risks.
- Respect the environment when cleaning.

Personal protective equipment
- Ensure that all participants have appropriate personal protective equipment to ensure safety and health during cleanup.
- Appropriate clothing (long sleeves and pants).
- Fluorescent vest
- Suitable shoes
- Gloves
- Depending on weather conditions: hat and sunglasses, sunscreen and drinking water.

Stay safe
- Only pick up litter that you can see clearly to avoid being pricked or cut by needles or glass.
- Hazardous waste should not be picked up. Inform your team leader who will contact an authorized person.
- Do not enter private property, dangerous areas or unstable ground. Be careful and stay away when in doubt.
- The usual safety rules remain applicable (road safety, water safety, fire, etc.).
- Wash your hands after cleaning.
- Please take into account the COVID rules, or others, in force in your region.
